Woody
Woody fragrances are characterized by aromatic or citrus head notes. In the heart you would typically find crisp, dry woody notes and dominant resin or wood are found in the base notes. Wood ingredients add richness, warmth, elegance and a depth to a fragrance and are key in perfume making. Due to their rich and aromatic weight, woody notes are frequently used as base notes in fragrances, providing a lasting and grounding element.
Woody notes in fragrance are a scent family derived from various types of wood, resins, and other natural materials, offering deep, warm, and often earthy aromas. These notes are a popular choice, particularly in colder months, for their ability to create a sense of comfort, warmth, and connection to nature.
Key Characteristics and Examples:
Woody notes often have a warm, rich, and sometimes slightly resinous quality, reminiscent of forests and nature. Within the woody family, there are sub-categories like:
Dry Woods: Like cedarwood and vetiver, known for their dry, sometimes smoky aroma.
Mossy Woods: Including oakmoss and patchouli, which offer a damp, rich, and slightly sweet scent.
Resinous Woods: Such as frankincense and myrrh, providing a balsamic, sweet, and potentially spicy undertone.
Creamy Woods: Sandalwood is a prime example, with its smooth, milky, and sensual scent.
While often associated with colder months, woody notes can be enjoyed year-round, especially when paired with other fragrance notes to create a balanced and versatile scent.
